FAMILY and friends of a university professor who was killed in an accident while on holiday in Italy have raised more than £3,000 for the man who risked his own life to try to save her.
York University Professor Sally Baldwin, 62, died on October 28, when she fell through a hole in a moving walkway at a railway station in Rome.
At her funeral in the Central Methodist Chapel, York, a collection was held to raise funds for rail driver Vincento Pratico.
Mr Pratico, 38, may lose one of his legs after suffering serious crush injuries while trying to save her.
A total of £3,030 was raised at the service and at a gathering at the Merchant Adventurers Hall afterwards.
Professor Baldwin's university colleague, Professor Jonathan Bradshaw, said yesterday: "We want to get the money to the railwayman as quickly as possible, so that it is of some help to him."
