POLICE investigating two alleged sexual assaults in neighbouring towns in Ryedale now say that one of the attacks was fictitious.
A 15-year-old girl had claimed that she was assaulted in the Welham Road area of Norton, at about 10pm on Friday, November 7. Following investigations, Malton Police have confirmed that this attack did not actually happen.
A police spokeswoman said: "It was a fictitious report and inquiries are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the allegation."
Investigations into the other incident, in which a 14-year-old girl alleges that she was the victim of a serious sexual assault between 8pm and 9pm in the Commercial Street area of Malton, are still ongoing.
Officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at that time on Friday. Anyone with information can call the witness line on (01609) 789355.
A man arrested in connection with the alleged assault was released on police bail at the weekend.
