ALMOST 3,000 childcare places will be created in County Durham over the next three years.
At least 800 carers will be recruited as part of a £17m investment that will help parents return to work or take up training.
County Durham's Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDCP) and other organisations have set up a strategy group to try to fill the vacancies.
Ian Grigg, workforce development team leader at Business Link County Durham, said: "This is obviously a wonderful opportunity for individuals and organisations to develop within the childcare sector.
"We are looking forward to providing assistance to a number of people considering business start up or self-employment as childminders.
"In addition, we will support existing businesses to develop their infra-structure and increase the skills of their employees.''
Taster courses will be available for people wanting to find out more about childcare careers.
Rose Envy, training co-ordinator for the EYDCP, said: "From there, the candidate can progress to a course relevant to their area of interest or pursue employment opportunities."
As part of the Government's commitment to develop childcare, the EYDCP is responsible for initiatives including out of school care and children's centres.
