VOLUNTEERS have teamed up with their council and other agencies to promote a new sporting activity in Wear Valley.

The 2D Volunteer Bureau, Wear Valley District Council, Durham Dales Primary Care Trust, Age Concern and One NorthEast are working in partnership to promote Tai Chi classes.

Tai Chi, Chi Gung is a gentle series of exercises available to all, regardless of fitness, age or mobility. Some of the proven benefits are enhanced fitness, reduced stress, emotional well-being and pain reduction.

A 12-week pilot scheme is being run across the district, starting at Bishop Auckland Town Hall from tomorrow, followed by sessions at Henknowle, Woodhouse Close and Coundon/Leeholme from November 21. Additional sessions will take place in Crook from January. Volunteer Margaret Taylor, who helped to organise the scheme, said: "There are lots of fitness activities for younger people, tai chi offers very effective exercise for those who want a gentler approach."

There are crech facilities at both Glenholme Leisure Centre, Crook, and Woodhouse Close, Bishop Auckland, but places need to be booked in advance. For more details, call Margaret Taylor on (01388) 601640.
