Division One: County Cup commitments meant only two games were played in the first division this week, Newton Aycliffe Sports Club continued their excellent form this season, when they played hosts to Shuttle and Loom.
But the Sports Club were made to work hard for the points as they came out 4-3 winners over a determined Shuttle side.
David Fawcet, Paul Baird, James Miller and one from man of the match Paul Stout found the net for the home side while John Wray, Stuart Curry and an own goal, saw the visitors come close to a share of the points.
The other game in the division saw Killinghall Arms visit Hurwoth Albion and it was the visitors who came out victorious, after a goalless first half. Killinghall broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the second half through Kevin Ashton. The second was netted by Adam Flynn and a strike from Mike Robson rounded off the scoring.
Division Two
The division's game of the day was between MN All Stars and St. Augustines. Steve Howden gave All Stars the perfect start with a goal inside five minutes, Jon Pearson then rose above the visitors defence to double the lead with a fine header. Chances were being created at both ends and it was Andy Cairns who reduced the deficit when he pulled a goal back for the visitors and with time running out Steve Piper popped up at the far post to equalise and give the Saints a deserved share of the spoils.
Royal Oak suffered a 6-0 reverse at home to The Falchion who ran out as convincing winners as the scoreline suggests. Three goals either side of half time gave the Falchion a throughly deserved victory over a lacklustre Royal Oak side. Simon Albeson, Mike Layton and James Benson all found the net, but it was a hat-trick from Andrew Hawkins that earned him the man of the match award and helped his team earn the points.
Goodfellas travelled to the Cricketers and came away with all three points goals from Emrhys Sheldon and Phil Cornforth proved too much for the Cricketers who had David Longstaff to thank for their only strike, which saw the visitors clinch a 2-1 victory
Sherwoods got their first league win of the season with a 3-0 win at Axa. The visitors took the lead inside ten minutes when the home side failed to clear their lines after a corner and the ball dropped to Rob Harland wh smashed a low volley into the net from the edge of the area. Five minutes later and it was from another corner which led to Sherwoods second goal of the game, unfortunately for the home side it was a lack of communication in by the defence which led to James Barbers attempted clearance ending up in his own net. Axa then started putting pressure on the visitors, but were hit on the break shotly before half time which resulted in a stunning 25 yard strike from Wayne Turner making it 3-0 going into the break. The second half however proved to be Axa's 45 minutes as they took advanage of the conditions and played some excellent football to create chance after chance, all of which went begging. Having managed just two goals in their last nine hours of football it is clear where Axa need to improve to arrest their slide down the table.
Division Three
Peacocks Pub Company emerged with the points after a close encounter with the Royal British Legion, thanks to goals from the Wake brothers, Steven and Kevin, who both found the net for the first time this season in a 2-1 victory. It was the visitors who started the better, however Peacocks took the lead when Michael Bland cut the ball back after some good work on the left for Steven Wake to fire home. After the break it was the Legion who pulled level after a quick free kick caught the home defence cold and the ball was headed into the net by the unlucky Peacocks defender giving his own keeper no chance. With the game heading for a draw Kevin Wake chose the perfect time to hit the winner and give the points to the home side.
Copper Beech came back well after some heavy defeats to put up an excellent show but failed to take any points against high-flying Middleton St. George, and it was the visitors who raced into a 2-0 half time led with goals from Jamie Langburn and Michael Cairns. The second half saw Matt Collinson pull a goal back for the Copper, but the two-goal advantage was restored with a brilliant goal from Mark Brischuk. Chris Dixon then hit a 20 yard strike to put the home side back in the game, but they were unable to force a draw.
Hole in the Wall faced the in form FRA Mowden and it was the visitors who took the points with a convincing 7-1 victory. Steven Barker notched for the visitors, but it was a hat-trick each for Richard Bestford and the prolific Stephen Thompson, that proved too much for the Hole In The Wall, who had an Andy Sidebottom effort to show for their efforts.
