RURAL folklore or traditional countryside skills can be learned at a series of workshops for conservationists.

The free events are being planned in Durham and Chester-le-Street, following the success of a workshop on the secret lives and folklore of woodland fungi recently.

Sixteen people met at Edmondsley Woods, near Consett, to attend a workshop by naturalist and fungi expert John Hemstock, from Thornley Woodland Centre.

Community and Bio-diversity Project Officer James Cokill, who works in Chester-le-Street, organised the event, said he was pleased so many people attended.

Other workshops planned to take place this month include an accredited course in woodland management techniques at the Riverside wildlife area in Chester-le-Street on Saturday and November 22, and a talk on folklore surrounding British wildlife at Lumley Castle next Thursday.

More sessions are planned for January and February, including a talk on the history of the River Wear at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street. To book places or find out more call Richard Graham on (0191) 388 6954 or Jim Cokill on (0191) 584 3112.
