ANTIQUES worth tens of thousands of pounds are to feature in the Tennants autumn catalogue sale at their auction rooms in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

The sale includes nearly 1,800 lots and takes place on November 19, 20 and 21.

Paintings, furniture, jewellery, pottery and ivory pieces will be going under the hammer, as well as miscellaneous items such as a stuffed seal caught in Orkney in 1908.

Among the lots is one of the finest collections of 19th Century ivories seen in the provinces for many years, including a German ivory plaque showing a procession of revellers decorated with gems and silver, which carries an estimated value of between £18,000 and £25,000.

In the Oriental section, a highly decorative Japanese enamel vase discovered by valuer Adam Schoon in a house in County Durham goes under the hammer at £20,000 to £30,000.

There is expected to be massive interest in a 17th Century needlework casket which is worked with Old Testament stories and a range of animals and flowers. Valuers estimate that it could go for more than £30,000.
