YOUNGSTERS are being encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables with the launch of a children's allotment.
Tindale Crescent allotments, in Bishop Auckland, has been transformed through a partnership venture between Surestart Wear Valley, Greenstart and the Auckland Gate Centre for adults with learning difficulties.
The idea behind the project is to encourage fathers and their young children to work together.
In six months, the partnership has cleared the ground, installed fencing and planted vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and flowering plants.
It has also provided an opportunity for the youngsters to work with adults with learning difficulties.
Debbie Ingoldsby, GreenStart co-ordinator, said: "The project is very exciting and is one of the first Greenstart-SureStart partnership projects to really take off.
"It's been a great way of encouraging parents to get out of the house and spend quality time with their children.''
Although a lot of work has already been done, there is still a long way to go with the project.
There are plans to put in raised flower beds and vegetable patches as well as installing a patio.
