NEWCASTLE United football boss Sir Bobby Robson ventured into red and white territory to launch Christmas events.
The Sacriston-born manager switched on the festive lights at the Dalton Park shopping complex at Murton, east Durham, an area where allegiances are with Newcastle's rivals, Sunderland.
Sir Bobby told the crowd, some in Sunderland shirts, that he was a County Durham lad and it was great to see them, whoever they supported.
Some fans were disgruntled at Sir Bobby's appearance but the complex management was delighted.
Park owner ING and manager Pantheon Retail presented Sir Bobby with £2,000 for St Cuthbert's Care, a local charity that looks after vulnerable children and adults.
Centre director David Gosling said: "We were delighted that Sir Bobby could join us, not only to mark the official start of Christmas at Dalton Park but to join us in helping those less fortunate."
