A village school has been given a glowing report by a team of official Government inspectors.

The Church of England primary school at Kirby Hill, near Boroughbridge, won plaudits in a range of areas from the Office of Standards in Education team.

The school, which has a pupil roll of 106 plus another 24 in the nursery class, was described as highly effective.

In more than half the lessons seen, the quality of teaching was very good or excellent which, combined with high standards of behaviour, has a major impact on pupils' learning, the report said.

The inspectors praised the new building and the high-quality learning environment the teaching team created.

The main strengths of the school were well above average national standards in English, mathematics and science, music, special needs, extra-curricular enhancement, early years provision, and the partnership with parents and the community.

Provision for personal development, including the spiritual, social, moral and cultural development was also deemed to be very good, and the inspectors described the governors as exceptionally committed with no key issues for school improvement to be addressed.

Headteacher Jackie Warburton said: "This very pleasing report reflects a tremendous contribution from many people, especially the staff and governor teams, who are extremely committed to providing the best education we can for the children all year round."
