MORE than 4,000 tonnes of grit have been stockpiled to use throughout the Darlington borough this winter.
Darlington Borough Council is also calling on drivers to make their own preparations for the cold months ahead.
As temperatures start to tumble and nights grow longer, Darlington Borough Council's highway and maintenance team is keeping a close eye on the weather.
Conditions are measured daily using the Vaisala Ice Prediction System, a computer device linked to the Meteorological Office.
The gritting team is on standby around the clock in case of any sudden change in the weather.
When temperatures drop to freezing the gritters will be out in the town - usually working from 5am to ensure the road is clear for morning road users.
Motorists are being asked to make checks on their lights, tyres and brakes to ensure their cars are roadworthy and safe for the winter.
They are also being reminded to leave plenty of time for journeys on frosty and icy mornings and to make use of the provided salt bins on sharp, slippery bends or steep gradients.
