A SOLDIER battled cold and fatigue when he took part in one of the toughest patrolling challenges in the Army.
Private Shaun Durkin, 20, from Darlington, was part of the Prince of Wales' Own Regiment team taking part in Exercise Cambrian Patro.
The exercise is a highlight of the British Army's training calendar and is viewed as one of the toughest patrolling tests for troops.
This year's event attracted 85 British regular and Territorial Army teams, army teams from Canada, Italy and France, as well as Royal Air Force teams.
Exercise Cambrian Patrol was first staged in 1959 as a long-distance marching competition over the Cambrian Mountains in mid-Wales.
Pte Durkin, who attended Carmel RC School before joining the Army in 1999, helped his team complete their patrol and win a silver award.
