DRIVERS are being warned of major road works in the Hartlepool area this weekend.
The A689 eastbound into Hartlepool will be closed from the edge of Newton Bewley to the junction with Dalton Back Lane, while a 2km long stretch of the road is completely resurfaced.
The road will be closed from 10pm on Friday and will reopen at about 10am on Sunday.
The road will be closed to through traffic, apart from traffic to Newton Bewley village, from Wolviston roundabout on the A689.
A diversion will be in place from the Wolviston roundabout, along the Seal Sands Road to the Seal Sands roundabout, then along the A178 and Brenda Road, and then along Seaton Lane to the Owton Lodge roundabout on the A689.
The A689 westbound from Hartlepool is not affected and will remain open as normal.
Brendan Colarossi, an engineer with Hartlepool Borough Council, said: "The road surface is more than 20 years old and has now come to the end of its life and must be renewed.
"We apologise for any inconvenience which the work may cause. We are doing all the work in one go at the weekend to try to keep disruption to road users to a minimum.
"If we were to try to maintain traffic flow into Hartlepool on the A689 by using a contra-flow system while the work is going on, it would result in very long delays for motorists travelling both ways and would take about three weeks."
