ALMOST 3,000 childcare places will be created in the county in the next three years.
And at least 800 carers will be recruited as part of a £17m investment that will help parents to return to work or take up training.
County Durham's Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership has set up a strategy group that will try to fill the vacancies.
Ian Grigg, workforce development team leader at Business Link County Durham, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals and organisations to develop within the childcare sector.
"We are looking forward to providing assistance to a number of people considering business start-up or self-employment as childminders.
"In addition, we will support existing businesses to develop their infrastructure and increase the skills of their employees." Taster courses will be available for people wanting more details about childcare careers.
As part of the Government's commitment to develop childcare, the partnership is responsible for initiatives including the development of out of school care and children's centres.
It also co-ordinates with Sure Start local programmes to provide childcare.
