A VILLAGE primary school has been awarded a healthy stamp of approval.
The Healthy School accolade was given to Brandon Infants and Nursery, near Durham, for a collective effort in making it a more pleasant environment to visit.
Headteacher Anne Charlton received the award on behalf of the school at a ceremony.
Alison Young, from County Durham and Darlington Healthcare NHS Trust's healthy schools initiative, made the presentation, with Maureen Bennett, an inspector from the local education authority.
Mrs Young praised everyone at Brandon Infants for achieving the award and commented on the positive attitude of the pupils about their school.
Mrs Charlton said the award covered physical, emotional, social, and health issues affecting the children.
"They seemed impressed that the children's views are taken seriously," she said.
"We do try to concern the children in issues concerning them.
"They have very definite ideas on what they want. We've let them have a say in choosing play equipment and designing the school garden, as well as helping to raise funds towards the projects."
Mrs Charlton thanked colleague Katie McGough, the lead teacher involved in the healthy schools initiative, for her efforts.
She said the good work will be continued with the formation of a school council, with each class nominating representatives, prior to formation in January.
The honour follows a School Achievement award which was earned for Brandon Infants' improved Sats test results last term.
