THOUSANDS of people are expected to line the streets of Darlington tonight for a parade.
The Runga Rung colour of colours parade and fireworks display begins at the Arts Centre, Vane Terrace, at 7.15pm. It replaces the annual lantern parade, and will make its way through the streets to the market place with a 12ft steel elephant as its centrepiece.
The Asian-influenced procession will then come to a climax with a human catherine wheel formation and more fireworks.
Throughout the day, various road closures will be in place to enable organisers to prepare for the event and for the procession to take place.
Church Row will be closed from 10am to 10.30pm. The Horsemarket, Bull Wynd and East Row will be closed from 3pm to 10.30pm. Skinnergate will be closed from 4pm to 10.30pm.
From 6.30pm Blakwellgate, West Row, the eastbound lane of Coniscliffe Road from Larchfield Street to Blackwellgate, Bond-gate and Prospect Place from the ring road to Northgate, Prebend Row, Tubwell Row, Priestgate from Crown Street to Prebend Row, Northgate from Prospect Place to Crown Street and Church Lane will all remain closed until 9pm.
