STUDENTS at a North-East school are staging their most ambitious performance to date about the life of the 17th Century scientist Galileo.
The production of The Life of Galileo by Teesdale Comprehensive School, in Barnard Castle, County Durham, was inspired by the Bertolt Brecht play, and fuses acting, comedy, music and physical theatre.
The play concerns Galileo's decision on whether to share his controversial discoveries about the universe, and face the threat of torture from the Spanish Inquisition.
The school's madrigal choir sing music from Monteverdi's Vespers and the cast contains a variety of colourful characters including cardinals, professors, aristocrats, jugglers and acrobats.
Headteacher Paul Harrison said: "With the school preparing to offer astronomy as a GCSE subject next year, the show is a fitting celebration of the school's new status as a Science College, and also of the wonderful talent and creativity of the students."
Performances take place from Wednesday to Friday, next week, at 7.30pm each day. Tickets cost £5 (£3 for concessions) and are available by calling (01833) 638166.
