Both the Under-18 and Under-16 Mowden Park Girls' Teams travelled to Redcar for concurrent fixtures.
Their spirits were high and the atmosphere electric as it is not very often that they play at the same place on the same day; their support for each other is tremendous and makes such matches real occasions. Also, both teams had high expectations of winning!
The Under-18s kicked off first in what was to be a highly competitive and skilful match. The final outcome of 34 -5 to Redcar belies the closeness of the two teams who fought for every ball. The first half was very tight with Redcar (playing with three borrowed players from Houghall College) scoring the first try after twelve minutes. However, Mowden quickly came back with a burst of speed from Ashleigh Wright who scored on the wing. This was followed by another converted try from Redcar that ended the first half 12-5 in their favour. The second half opened with everything to play for, but the superior speed of Redcar and some ball handling mistakes by Mowden resulted in a good win for Redcar.
The Under-16s opened their match wanting to turn the tables on Redcar and they succeeded, ending with a resounding victory of 54- 0. Cheered on by the U18s (who were still exuberant despite their defeat') the Under-16s scored try after try. Redcar had no answer to Mowden's superior skill, agility speed and game knowledge as the Park girls scored from all positions, from both set pieces and open play. Mowden try scorers were: Sarah Ferguson (2), Ceri Breakingbury, Sian Taylor (2), Amber Hyde (2) and Judy Williams. Seven conversions came from Laura Collins who has just started kicking for Mowden; her dedication and practice has really paid off Mowden Park Under-16 Girls next meet Redcar in the first round of the national cup.
