NOTED North Yorkshire Charolais breeders Mick and Jean Hayhurst of Kirkby Misperton, Malton, had several successes at Carlisle, on Saturday.

Whitecliffe Taurus CH22, a 20-month old bull by the 28,000gns Perth champion, Brampton Nacodar, and out of the prize winning Balmyle Oliveoil was bought for 4,000gns by TL Forster and Son, Lowgate, Hexham.

The Hayhursts' Whitecliffe Tyson CH29, a 19-month old by Dingle Hofmeister and out of another Balmyle cow sold for 3,500gns to J Preece and Sons, Leigh, Gloucester.

Overall, Charolais met a solid trade, peaking at 8,000gns twice at the breed society's annual two-day autumn show and sale. Last Friday, bidding was led at 8,000gns by the champion, Sarkley Tatiana, an outstanding 16-month-old maiden and within the breed's top 1pc with a beef value of CH39. Bred by the Pennie family of Powys, she was by their homebred bull going back to Meolfre Mecsico and out of a homebred dam by Oldstone Egbert.

The Pennies, who return to Carlisle tomorrow to offer 14 high genetic merit spring-born Charolais calves, on Saturday took reserve male champion, with Sarkley Trojan CH35 which made 5,000gns to V Allgood, Nunwick, Hexham. An 18-month old Loganbar Herdsman son, he was out of a homebred cow, a granddaughter of Maerdy Impeccable.

The reserve Christmas Cracker title went to Midas Susie CH28, a two-year-old sold in calf to Friarton Ensign. A Balthayock Matthew daughter, and out of a Glebedale bred cow, Susie was offered by Roger Coppinger, of Wem, and was bought for 2,800gns by Dick Garner and Sons, Kirkby Fleetham, Northallerton.

The Garners took home three more leading female lots including at 2,600gns Kelsall and Marsden's (Goosnargh, Preston) Bleasdale Treasure CH27, a 20-month heifer bred from homebred lines.

Welsh breeders dominated the bull sale on Saturday with the leading 8,000gns call going to Wyn Rees' (Llanidloes) Hendy Tornado, an 18-month-old by Allanfauld Vagabond and out of a homebred cow going back to Blelack lines. The buyers were J W Dent and Sons, Lartington, Barnard Castle.

Champion bull, Moelfre Triumph from Kevin Thomas of Newcastle Emlyn secured the next highest bid of 6,000gns for 19-months-old, Triumph, by Allanfauld Norseman and out of a homebred cow.

Next to go at 4,000gns was Whitecliffe Taurus CH22 from Mick and Jean Hayhurst, Kirkby Misperton, Malton. Sired by the 28,000gns Perth champion, Brampton Nacodar, this 20-month-old was out of the prize winning Balmyle Oliveoil which secured at the Christmas Cracker three years ago. The buyers were TL Forster and Son, Lowgate, Hexham.
