A HEALTHIER diet and a new name are on the menu at an east Durham community cafe.
A competition was staged among Wheatley Hill residents and users of the cafe in an attempt to rename it.
Resident Lyndsey Nesbitt came up with Comminicafe and won a basket of fruit.
The village restaurant is a joint venture between Easington Primary Care Trust and Easington District Council to encourage healthier eating.
It is funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund for two months, after which it is hoped it will become self sufficient.
While the cafe continues to serve favourites such as bacon sandwiches and English breakfasts, it has introduced more healthy options, including fruit juice, fruit salad and cereal and milk.
If extension plans for the village's community centre go ahead, it is hoped to widen the menu.
Lucy Crystal-Smith, of the care trust, said: "We are hoping that by introducing these healthy options into Wheatley Hill Comminicafe, local residents will have improved access to a choice of nutritious food and ultimately give their health a boost."
The restaurant is open every Friday, between 9am and noon, in the community centre.
