FORMER Hartlepool United favourite Tommy Miller last night received his first international call-up, writes Nick Loughlin.

The Ipswich Town midfielder, who started his career at Victoria Park and moved to Portman Road for £750,000 in the summer of 2001, was named in the Scotland future squad for next Wednesday's game with Turkey in Dundee.

Miller was recommended to Scotland boss Berti Vogts by Ipswich assistant manager Willie Donachie.

Born in Shotton, his grandmother was born in Kirkcaldy, and the Scottish FA requested Miller's family birth certificates earlier this season after a string of impressive displays.

He scored a penalty in Saturday's win at Cardiff, to maintain his 100 per cent record from the spot for the Blues and is line to start tomorrow's game at Nottingham Forest after recovering from injury.

Neither Miller nor his dad, Tommy - Pool's chief scout - knew of the call-up until informed by Northern Echo Sport, but official confirmation came through late last night from the SFA.

After being KO'd from Euro 2004 in last month's play-offs, Vogts is turning his attentions to the World Cup 2006 qualifying campaign.

Miller is one of five new names in a squad which includes Newcastle duo Gary and Steve Caldwell. Sunderland's Kevin Kyle has been left out.

Vogts said: ''This match marks the first stage of our World Cup campaign, as it gives these players a chance to show what they can do.

''Our young players need international football experience, and for those players not involved in the Champions League or UEFA Cup, this is a great opportunity to get that experience.''
