DETECTIVES investigating the death of a 65-year-old man have been studying closed-circuit TV footage of the night he died.
The body of John Gibson was found in Dean Road Cemetery, in Scarborough, at 8.30pm last Thursday. He died from stab wounds, and a knife later recovered from the cemetery is now undergoing forensic tests.
Police say CCTV footage from Thursday night indicates that plenty of people were in the cemetery area between 6pm and 8pm, although there is no TV footage of any kind of incident involving Mr Gibson and other people.
Mr Gibson, known as Jack, left his home on Cambridge Street, in Scarborough, to walk his dog, Scruffy, at 6pm on Thursday. His wife reported him missing when he failed to return home and his body was discovered at 8.30pm after a member of the public found his dog and took it to a police station.
Officers spent last night in and around the cemetery, talking to members of the public to try to find anyone who saw Mr Gibson walking his dog, a black and white Jack Russell cross. Posters are also being circulated to local shops.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We are still trying to piece together his route from his home in Cambridge Street to the cemetery in Dean Road."
Anyone who saw Mr Gibson, who was wearing a maroon jacket, blue trousers and black baseball cap, with his dog is asked to contact Scarborough police on (01723) 509352.
