MONKEY pudding and hot dog risotto may not sound like haute cuisine but they were enough to win national recognition for two Northallerton schoolgirls.
Amy Allen and Hannah Williams reached the finals of the Grab 5 competition in London, which encouraged students to come up with ways of persuading other youngsters to eat the recommended five portions of fruit or veg a day.
Competitors had only 45 minutes to make their dish, which could not cost more than £2 - and Amy and Hannah's creation was good enough to be highly commended by the judges.
"We aimed to make it colourful so we put red peppers in the risotto as well as sweetcorn and onions," said Amy, 16.
"Strawberries, bananas and chocolate went in the pudding - it was really good fun,'' said Hannah, also 16.
Both Amy and Hannah, who attend Northallerton College, were given a £25 gift voucher.
As to the future, Hannah has her sights set on a career in body art design while Amy hopes to teach English.
