Gt Ayton v Stakesby Arms: The teams took to the field with gale force winds and driving rain to contend with. Stakesby went on the attack from the kick off, putting the Ayton defence under immediate pressure.
After five minutes Chris Headlam gave Stakesby the lead when the Ayton keeper failed to hold on to the ball. The equaliser came when Ripley forced his way into the penalty area to guide the ball past the advancing Cummins in the visitors goal. An Ian Smith Lob from the half way line flew into the net like a rocket then Mike Headlam was allowed to score as the Aytron defenders found it difficult to clear. Mike Headlam followed this with a neat volley to beat the helpless Ayton keeper.
Playing the better football, Ayton reduced the arrears just before half time when Ripley netted his second. With the wind at their backs in the second half, Ayton looked for a goal feast but a determined defensive display by Stakeby held up their progress. The goal rush came when Busby hit a sweet free kick from 25 yarrds, quickly followed by a goal from Murray when he capitalised on a defensive error. Ayton then took the lead for the first time when Hyde finished off a good passing move. Battling against the wind Stakesby were still buoyant and put themselves back in the game when Smith found himself free on the right and shot across the Ayton keeper. Ayton immediately came back as Busby, this seasons match winning maestro, was able to weave his magic on the left to score the all important winning goal for Ayton.
Highland Laddie v Goldsborough
Goldsborough starting the stronger with Bagnall and Stewart working hard. Laddie kicking into the strong wind tried hard to get forward, Lowther missing a golden chance on 25 minutes, sa good stop from keeper, Sanderson, denying a certain goal. At the other end Bennet was kept busy in the Laddie goal stopping a good effort from Marsay. On 35 minutes Marsay sprinted for goal again and this time managed to squeeze his shot past Bennet. In a rare attack, seconds before half time Laddie equalised, good work from daynes and Neesam putting Lawther through to score from close range. With the wind advantage in the second half, Laddie pressed more and began to look dangerous, Rye and Powell both going close. Goldsborough still created chances of their own, Dent forcing a goos save from Bennet and the Laddie having to defend well to keep the game level. On 75 minutes Comballack combined well with Lawther to tuck the ball home to give Laddie the lead. Laddie were now flying and 5 minute later Lawther was on the score sheet again with a fine 20 yard lob making the final score 3 - 1.
Hinderwel v Black Swan
Hinderwell extended their unbeaten league run to 7 matches with this draw against a well organised Black Swan team. In the worst possible conditions, as a bitter howling wind roared around the Croft, the players had great difficulty controlling and passing the ball. Hinderwell started the brighter missing a couple of reasonable chances before centre forward Hicks deflected a Khawaja shot in the 25th minute to put the home side into the lead. Both keepers performed heroics to prevent any furthe scoring, Hinderwells Robinson making a prticularly outstanding save from a wicked swirling free kick. Robinson was finally beaten when Scott popped up to grab the equaliser. A draw was a fair result, both teams and officials to be commended for the spirit in which the match was played in such difficult conditions.
Lealholm v Staithes Ath
Even the normally sheltered Lealholm groiund was affected by the bad conditions, Lealholm finding themselves ahead after ten minutes as the swirling wind caused confusion and Carruthers headed the ball into the net following a corner. For the next 20 minutes the home team looked comfortable then Staithes found the equaliser with a well taken shot from Smith from the edge of the area. Lealholm replied with two quick goals, Bowes netting from a Harland cross and then a Welham cross was carried by the wind to bounce past the Staithes keeper. Just before half time Dale put Staithes back into the game with a well taken goal. An early second half goal from Ward brough the score level. Lealholm needing to hold on, battled against the wind and were unlucky not to take the lead when a Hodgson shot was well saved by Staithes keeper, Moore. 10 minutes later substitute Lee Gibson clinched the points for Staithes with a good headed goal.
