Kingsway Krugerrand Competition
Ithe first semi-final Ronnie Peacock of Wheatley Hill edged ahead of Clyde Pearson of Darlington in a very tight first frame The safety play was very accurate although neither player was potting balls with their usual confidence. However Peacock went on to win 56-35.
In the second frame both players managed to get into the twenties for the first time, Pearson knocking in 21 against Peacock's 20. However Pearson got the better of the later exchanges to square the match at one each with a 74-39 win. Pearson then went ahead when he moved twenty-one ahead on the colours but saw Peacock suffer some bad luck. Peacock took the yellow, green and brown, but then unfortunately went in-off the blue. Pearson took the blue and pink to take the frame 63-35.
Pearson took an early blue in the fourth frame, scattering the pack in the process. However there was no easy pot and Peacock took advantage of a slack safety shot to put in a 28 break. He left a tight snooker, which Pearson failed to hit and suffered from three miss calls. Pearson looked to be able to recover from an eighteen points deficit after he fluked a successful snooker on the blue but then missed an easy pink, allowing Peacock to level the match with a 67-59 win.
Pearson again scattered the reds early in the fifth but Pearson missed a black off the spot, allowing his opponent to knock in runs of 22 and 19. Pearson dominated the frame as he found some of his undoubted potting skill to take the frame at 72-20. Peacock made a good start to frame six and went ahead at 42-18 but Pearson hit vital runs of 24 and 30 to win the match 4 frames to 2 with a 73-48 victory.
On Thursday, 11 December the final at the Kingsway Club (above the Lightfoot Institute), Kingsway, Bishop Auckland will be between either Paul Hickman of Shotton or Charlie Blake from Middleton-in-Teesdale against Clyde Pearson. Worthington CIU Team Knock Out
The final black after a five frames aggregate score match gave Willington victory in their match at Hunwick B, where the home side received fifty-seven points start.
The first frame was very tight with both players together for most of the time. However Gordon Parkin edged Willington to a victory by eleven points over Trevor Lomax to cut the overall deficit. Arthur Godsborough continued the good work for Willington when he beat Arnold Fleming by thirty-six points to cut the home lead down to just ten points.
David Penman lifted the Hunwick hopes with a twenty-nine points win over Tom Parkin, but Stan Bennett's twenty-two points win over Hunwick's Barry Fleming left the home side with a slender twelve points lead. John Bate defended this lead in the final frame against Jeremy Martin until he reached the final black with a one point lead. Both players missed chances but Martin eventually took the black, which put Willington into the Second Round, where they will play at Newton Aycliffe on 16 December.
National CIU Singles Championship
David Craggs of Tow Law travelled to Benwell to try to prevent David Lilley from landing his third consecutive title in the CIU Championship. Craggs got off to a great start on the tight table and took the first frame with a 68 break. Craggs made the better start to the second frame and got into a 52 points lead but missed an awkward red, which allowed Lilley in to make an 80 clearance. In the third frame Craggs was first in and reached 24 with a black from which he cannoned into the pack. Unfortunately no red was available and he tried a difficult plant, missed and Lilley stepped up to knock in 79.
In the fourth frame Crags again was first in with 38, again cannoning into the reds to open them. Once again nothing materialised and Lilley came with a late 48 break to take the frame and the match at 3 frames to one.
Michael Pratt of Chilton and Windlestone entertained Stuart Maxwell of Hardwick Social Club, Stockton in a tight match, which looked like a comfortable victory for him. Pratt took the first frame, which had been safety dominated, on the pink.
In the second frame Maxwell got into a lead and stayed ahead until the players reached the colours with Pratt 25 behind. However he got in to clear all the colours for a narrow frame victory. The third frame opened out with Maxwell putting in a 38 break, leaving Pratt 48 behind with four reds on the table. He took the reds with colours and then cleared up to the blue, but failed on the pink, which he needed for victory. Maxwell filed with his attempted safety and Pratt potted the pink for a 3-0 victory.
