FATHER Christmas was rescued from the roof of a Darlington supermarket at the weekend after his reindeer flew off without him.
A fire engine arrived at Asda, in Whinbush Way, on Saturday morning to help the stranded Santa.
The stunt was part of a day of activities at the supermarket to raise money for Darlington's Giving Tree Appeal.
Youngsters were invited to watch the drama unfold then visited Santa in his grotto and skated on a specially-constructed ice rink.
Asda spokeswoman Jane Chapman said: "The fire service offered to help out so long as a real emergency wasn't happening at the same time.
"We have had such a good time. Everybody has been really generous and we have raised lots of money to buy gifts for the Giving Tree."
The Giving Tree Appeal, organised by the borough council's social services department, asks Christmas shoppers to buy an extra gift for needy families.
Unwrapped presents can be left at collection points throughout the town until December 18. Apart from Asda, collection points are also at the Alpha 103.2FM studios, in Woodland Road, Matalan, in Neasham Road, The Northern Echo offices, in Priestgate, and the Herald and Post office, in Duke Street.
To raise money for the appeal, call Janet Robinson on (01325) 346841.
