CLUBBERS were targeted at the weekend by police investigating the killing of a convicted paedophile.

Cleveland Police officers have complained about the lack of response from the Redcar community over the death of Arnold Hartley, 73, of Queen Street.

As part of the investigation into his death, uniformed and plain-clothed officers went into the town in the early hours of Saturday to speak to people returning from pubs and clubs in the area.

They were looking for anyone who might have been in the same area between midnight and 1am on Saturday, November 29, when the attack was believed to have taken place.

Mr Hartley was found dead at his home. He had been beaten about the head and face.

Forty-five people were spoken to on Saturday night, and officers are now following up information received during the operation.

Leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Brian Dunn said: "The information that we received will be checked against facts and statements we have already collected.

"Hopefully, our operation will open the door further on life on the streets in that area of Redcar.

"Someone holds that vital piece of information that will help lead us to the killers."

Mr Hartley was on the sex offenders' register and considered a medium risk.

He was jailed for a year in August 2001 after he admitted taking indecent pictures of a girl under 14 and one offence of gross indecency involving the youngster.

Anyone with information about his death is asked to call police on (01642) 302626 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
