FIVE new nature reserves aimed at getting more people out into the countryside were officially launched in Derwentside at the weekend.

The occasion was marked with a hedge laying project at South Stanley Woods, a 25.8 hectare site on the Durham Pennine fringe, in Stanley.

Derwentside District Council vice-chairman, Councillor Cath Clark, who opened the site, said: "The creation of these nature reserves is an important development for the district.

"They will benefit the environment and wildlife, while at the same time providing an important amenity for residents."

The project is overseen by Karen Fisher, the first local nature reserve officer for Derwentside.

Her post is funded by a National Lottery grant, administered through English Nature's Wildspace grant scheme.

Ms Fisher said: "It is important that people who cannot travel a long way should be able to enjoy the countryside.

"We are hoping to get young people away from their computers and video games and back outdoors, as well.

"The whole idea is to encourage local people to help with the running of the sites, and to use them as an educational tool."

"I will be leading activities for local groups, including schools and scout groups, to encourage understanding of nature conservation and local interest."

South Stanley Woods consists mainly of oak and hazel, with a wet area including alder and natural ponds.

A wet woodland along the original line of the river, it is rich in wildlife and contains elements of typical upland oak woodland.

Ms Fisher said that, in the past, motorbikes had used much of the site and other areas had been prone to fly-tipping.

She said: "The anti-social element inhibits bona fide users, who are reluctant to use the site.

"It is hoped that the anti-social element will be discouraged from using the site as more of the woodland is used in a positive manner."

The other nature reserves are Kyo Bogs, Catchgate; Harperley and Pea Woods, Tanfield Lea; Deep Dene, Dipton and Allenford Woods at Moorside.

Volunteers meet every Thursday to carry out conservation work, including tree felling and planting.
