FIRE crews are warning people not to leave candles unattended after a fire started in a house while the occupant slept.
The man escaped the house uninjured after the candle flame set fire to the television on which it was standing.
Middlesbrough firefighters were called to the smoke-filled house at 11.40pm on Friday.
Station officer Dave Wass said: "As it was an uncontrollable naked flame it could have caused a lot of damage.
"If you have got candles be very careful where you leave them and make sure they are out. Make sure they are in a fireproof container."
The fire caused smoke and fire damage to the second floor attic bedroom. Fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used a jet to tackle the flames.
