A NEW cycle track will help keep youngsters safe on the roads.
The £21,000 bikeway at Glendene School, in Easington Colliery, is 150 metres long.
To provide a sense of realism, it has two roundabouts, road markings and signs.
About 20 children from Glendene and neighbouring schools helped launch the L-shaped track using a range of cycles, including some specially built or adapted for cyclists with disabilities.
Glendene headteacher Eric Baker said: "The track is not only a major addition to our PE curriculum and play area, but will also contribute to the general health and fitness of the community and develop school and community road safety awareness."
He said the eventual aim was to establish an out-of-hours community cycling club, developed by school staff in partnership with the local primary care trust and district council.
Funding for the track came from the New Opportunities Fund, Lloyds TSB, Friends of Glendene and school funds.
