Bottom-of-the-table Ferryhill Athletic have not enjoyed the best of seasons but they celebrated on Saturday when they went nap, defeating Washington Nissan UK in the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup.
Their confidence grew after taking an 11th-minute lead through Stuart Cottam and although Nissan twice equalised, Ferryhill scored three times when they dominated extra time.
Neil Cuthbertson was the first to score for the home side who were reduced to ten men in the second period when Stephen Smith was sent off.
Mark Stephenson restored the advantage to Ferryhill but in the last minute Mark Patterson took the tie into additional time when Ferryhill romped home with further strikes by Cottam, Philip Appleby and Stephenson.
Darlington RA maintained the improved form they have shown in recent weeks when they won 3-1 at New Marske. They never looked back after building up a three-goal interval lead through Steven Roberts (2) and Paul Freary. Although James Kesterson reduced the deficit, RA comfortably reached the third round.
Stokesley SC needed a last minute goal by Adam Bramwell to see off Gateshead Reserves. David Grainge and Nathan Haslam put the visitors in control at the halfway stage but when Simon Bates and Scott Kerr replied, it was all to play for.
Wolviston had to work hard for victory over Jarrow. David Dowd was a 20th-minute scorer for the home team and just before half time Dean Patton deservedly equalised.
The winner came midway through the second period as goalkeeper Liam Richardson could only parry a shot by Keiron White which fell into the path of Carl Brunskill, who drilled the ball home.
North Shields needed extra time before winning 3-1 at Ryhope CW who scored first courtesy of Stephen Rochester. After Ian Dugdale levelled, Rochester was red-carded in the 30th minute but even so, the Wearsiders held out until the first period of additional time when Stephen Hamil pounced. In the last minute, Roy Gordon added a third for the Robins.
Despite goals by Craig Rolfe and Paul Jary, Boldon CA went out 3-2 to Whitehaven and Windscale won by a similar margin at home to Annfield Plain.
Mark Young, Peter O'Donnell and Kevin Law (pen) struck for the Cumbrians with Barry Lindoe and Ben Thompson (pen) replying for the Plain.
Leaders Birtley Town defeated second-top Cleadon SC by an only goal scored by Phil Makel with only 11 minutes remaining. He showed quality when he created space before driving the ball into the net.
One game was played in the League and Harton and Westoe moved into sixth position defeating Barnard Castle Glaxo 3-1 with a brace of goals from Tommy Nixon and one by Jonathan Mullen.
