A LEGAL battle will begin today to decide the future of the four dilapidated former navy ships that have been sent to the UK from the US for dismantling.
Friends of the Earth (FoE) will apply to the High Court for a judicial review of the Environment Agency's decision to modify the waste management licence Able UK needs to carry out the work in the North-East.
FoE said it opposed the plan because the necessary permissions were not in place when the four ships left the James River, in Virginia, breaching international law.
If the legal challenge is successful, Able UK will have to apply for a new waste management licence and carry out a full environmental impact assessment if it is to continue with the £11m plan.
