Three men have been arrested and charged with possessing drugs in the area around Barnard Castle.
Police said yesterday that the arrests were part of Operation Bullseye, in which alleged drug dealers and users are being targeted in Teesdale and other parts of the county.
The operation also includes a campaign against shoplifting, so extra police patrols will be on duty around the town centre in the run-up to Christmas.
Sergeant John Turner, of Barnard Castle police, said yesterday: "We will have more high-profile patrols in the town's main shopping area for the rest of the festive season, in an effort to persuade thieves to stay well away.
"At the same time, we would like to remind motorists not to drink and drive. We hope everyone has a pleasant time but will be keeping an eye out for anyone silly enough to drink too much before getting behind the wheel."
