A LANDFILL site will be producing eco-friendly electricity by the end of the year when building work on a generation plant is finished.

The site, at Scorton, near Richmond, closed in September this year after reaching its capacity.

But the company responsible for the site, Yorwaste Ltd, in Northallerton, is working in partnership with renewable power generation experts, Natural Power, North Yorkshire County Council and the landowner, Tarmac Ltd to build an electricity generation station at the site.

The station will allow methane gas from the landfill to be safely converted into green electricity that will be fed back into the National Grid. This will provide one megawatt of electricity - enough power for 1,000 homes.

Tony Sharkey, Yorwaste's waste strategy and contracts manager, said it would stop landfill gas being released, preventing methane from getting into the atmosphere, and generate electricity without having to use fossil fuels such as gas, coal and oil.
