DETECTIVES investigating a double murder yesterday named two men found battered to death in a bedsit.

The partially decomposed bodies of Kevin Mulgrew, 38, and Daniel Wall, 27, were found in the bedsit above a bakery in Gillygate, York.

Police said the men were known to them, and that they had connections with the York drugs scene.

Both men died from severe head injuries, believed to have been caused by a blunt object.

Detectives are now trying to track down the tenant of the flat, who has not been named.

Leading the investigation is Detective Superintendent Javad Ali. Speaking yesterday, he said: "We are trying to trace the tenant of the flat. I would urge him to come forward and contact me as a matter of priority so I can eliminate him from the inquiry."

He said the public was not in danger from whoever carried out the attack.

He said: "This was not a random killing and it was not indiscriminate. We do not believe the public are at risk at this stage."

Det Supt Ali appealed for anyone with information about the murders to contact him. He said: "It may well be that other members of the York drug scene can provide us with information, and if that is the case, I would urge them to contact me, in confidence if necessary."

Both of the men were from York. Mr Mulgrew was separated from his wife, with whom he had three sons, aged 14, 13 and ten.

Mr Wall was single and was described as well-liked.

Their bodies were found by police officers on Thursday afternoon, after staff at the bakery below contacted City of York Council about the flat.

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on (01904) 669430, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
