AN upgrading of Darlington's civic amenity site could be given the go-ahead next year.
A review of the facility, off Whessoe Road, has recommended a series of changes.
Council officials were concerned about traffic building up around the site, its tired and congested appearance and the limited recycling available.
There were also worries about the lack of electricity and no assistance being given to people unloading vehicles.
As a result of the review, changes could be made, with Darlington Borough Council hoping to secure a grant from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Plans to enlarge and improve the site have been drawn up and could be approved in January.
If they are accepted, the site would have separate areas for recycling a range of materials, including green waste, timber, cardboard and paper.
All the waste skips at the site would also be accessible without the use of steps, and further improvements would also be made.
