POLICE say they have identified alleged bullies who tormented paedophile Arnold Hartley, known as Robbie.

Mr Hartley, 73, died in the early hours of November 29 after being attacked at his home in Queen Street, Redcar, east Cleveland.

Information given to police has helped them to identify a number of people who were allegedly involved in acts of intimidation against the convicted sex offender.

Detective Superintendent Brian Dunn, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "We are grateful to those who have come forward voluntarily with information. It has helped us to build up a picture of the lifestyle of Mr Hartley.

"New information has also helped us identify some of the bullies who made his life a misery. We know he was threatened and had cash and valuables taken off him in the months leading up to his death.

"We are starting to put names to faces and know of several people who have stolen from Mr Hartley, and our inquiries are making progress."

Det Supt Dunn advised people who had not contacted the police to do so as soon as possible.

"It will save us time, allowing us to carry out other inquiries. Otherwise we will come knocking on their door," he said

Det Supt Dunn said police were not only interested in getting information from the time Mr Harley was killed, but also wanted information to help them understand what led to the fatal attack.

"Many people in the area must have been aware of the bullying and intimidation Mr Hartley was facing," he said.

"People passing by must have seen activity at that house. It would make our job a lot easier if they would come forward."
