A THEFT from a disabled woman has prompted police to warn Christmas shoppers to be on their guard.

The 50-year-old, from Brandon, was sitting on a Motorbility scooter in a lift at the Prince Bishops car park, Durham City, when her purse was stolen from her handbag.

Police believe the theft was carried out by a man and a woman, who were also stood in the lift at about 9.30am on Monday.

When it reached level five, the pair opened and closed the lift doors to distract their victim, while they stole her purse, which contained £110 and credit cards.

Police urged shoppers to be wary, as pickpockets and thieves can take advantage of busy streets and shops.

Detective Sergeant Eric Malkin, of Durham City police, said: "This was a distraction crime committed against a vulnerable member of the community. I would urge anyone with any information about it to contact us.

"At this time of year, people are preoccupied with Christmas shopping and streets, car-parks, shops and restaurants are very busy. So it's more important than ever to ensure valuables are not on display and kept in a bag that is safely fastened."

Witnesses are asked to contact police on 0191-386 4222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
