PLANS to install an access ramp for disabled people at a tourist attraction are likely to be approved, despite objections.
The North-Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group has submitted plans to Darlington Borough Council for the ramp at the town's Hopetown Carriageworks.
The Grade II-listed building originally formed the workshops of the Darlington and Stockton railway.
The proposed ramp would be installed on the western side of the building, but the plans are being opposed by Darlington Civic Trust.
Its letter of objection said it appreciated the need for disabled access facilities, but said: "Neither the applicants nor their agent seem to appreciate the full architectural significance of the building, in relation to railway history.
"It may be classed as industrial use, but it is of the utmost importance to avoid the use of materials, such as concrete and the tubular steel pipes proposed."
But council officers are supporting the application. A report to councillors says the ramp is "acceptable in terms of its general appearance".
The council's planning applications committee will consider the matter tomorrow.
