TWO men have pleaded guilty to having faulty tyres on a car involved in a road accident.

Philip Atkinson, 61, of Ruskin Road, Darlington, had borrowed Daniel Aidan Holland's green Mondeo on October 20, when it was involved in an accident on the A1(M), half a mile south of the Burtree roundabout.

The car was written-off after it overturned and came to rest on its roof on the motorway.

Atkinson was the only person in the vehicle at the time. He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

At Darlington Magistrates Court yesterday, Atkinson admitted driving the vehicle with two worn tyres.

Holland, 57, of Acorn Drive, Oakenshaw, near Willington, admitted allowing Atkinson to drive the car with worn tyres.

In mitigation, Holland told magistrates he had had the tyres on the vehicle checked at a garage three weeks before the accident.

The court heard that normally the police give motorists 14 days to rectify a problem, but because the car was written off, the men did not get the opportunity.

Magistrates imposed three points each on their licences and ordered them to pay £35 costs each.
