RESIDENTS in Ingleby Barwick will be paid a visit by Father Christmas this week.

Two years ago, members of Ingleby Community Church decided to tour the estate's streets dressed in Victorian costume and distribute sweets, Christmas cards and an invitation to its carol service.

The idea came about after church leaders were concerned about the lack of traditional community events that take place in the area.

Now in its third year, the event, which will see Santa tour the estate in a motorised sleigh, will run every night this week, from 5pm to 7pm, until Friday.

Jez Fletcher, leader of the church, said: "This is the third year that we have helped with Santa Claus's visit. The area is so well provided for in many ways, but often lacks that community feel.

"This event certainly brings folks out of their houses on to the streets, and the response we receive is wonderful.

"We are not collecting for a cause, but if anyone wishes to give any donations, proceeds will be given to The Butterwick Trust."

The community church meets every Sunday at 6.30pm in the function suite at Bannatyne's Health Club, in Myton Way.
