A CHARITY is appealing for donations to help make this Christmas as special as possible for families it is helping to escape domestic violence.
For 30 years, Wear Valley Women's Aid has helped women and families across the district break away from domestic violence and build new lives.
Throughout the year the refuge serves as a temporary home for six women and their children who have escaped abusive partners.
But at no time is their need for support greater than at Christmas, when everyone is bombarded with images of idyllic family life.
Refuge worker Fiona Nicol said: "Over the Christmas and New Year period there is a greater sense of isolation for women and children, who may be away from the former family home and fathers for the first time.
"We try to make Christmas as good as possible for them. We make the effort to watch children in school plays, have nice food, gifts and parties."
As a charity, the organisation relies on support from community groups and individuals to fund its work, so it is making a special plea for Christmas donations.
Children's worker Louise Brown said: "It really is about peace and goodwill, building strong friendly relationships and having a fun time.
"We need help to be able to offer our families the best possible Christmas. Groups like Bishop Auckland Methodist Church bring home-made cakes and mince pies, but the more the merrier."
Donations of gifts, for women aged 20 to 60 and boys and girls of all ages, food, drink and other festive items can be taken to the refuge at 9 Etherley Lane, Bishop Auckland, or telephone Alison Hope on (01388) 600094.
