OLYMPIC athlete and broadcaster Allison Curbishley was guest of honour at the Macmillan College awards ceremony last night.

More than 1,200 guests attended the event, which was held at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Another guest was Mary Butterwick, founder of the Butterwick Hospice, who accepted a cheque for £2,000, which Macmillan students had raised as part of their on-going charity work.

In his annual address to governors, award sponors, including The Northern Echo, staff, students and parents, Mr Fraser applauded all of the award winners.

He said while many college students had worked hard and done well, these young people had performed exceptionally well and praised staff for their hard work.

Mr Fraser said: "The college is very fortunate to have a team of people who do not see their role simply as a job, rather as something which can make a real and significant difference to young people's life chances."

Last year, 93 per cent of 16-year-olds at Macmillan College gained five or more GCSE passes at grade A*-C, the highest the college had ever achieved. This placed Macmillan in a very elite group of schools since only three in the whole of the North-East have now passed the 90 per cent mark.
