STREET wardens helped defuse an incident on a housing estate last night.
Two wardens were patrolling in Pallister Park, Middlesbrough, early in the evening when they spotted a gang of 15 to 20 youths surrounding a taxi.
The gang ran off and were chased by the wardens, who called for two colleagues to help.
After giving chase they caught one of the youths, who had been trying to steal cash from the taxi.
Police, who had also responded to the wardens' calls, arrested the youth.
Executive board member for public protection issues, Councillor Barry Coppinger, said: "The incident shows how well the wardens and police are working together. Giving each other mutual support like this is extremely important.
"The quick thinking and action by the wardens helped defuse an ugly incident and their vigilance is to be commended."
