A Shildon pre-school nursery has become the first in the county to receive a national award for giving youngsters a good start in life.
Byerley Road Pre-school yesterday received the Pre-school Learning Alliance national accreditation certificate for excellent quality of provision.
The group, which started in St Thomas Church Hall as a play group over 20 years ago, earned the accolade through the alliance's accreditation scheme.
It recognises the importance of linking early years learning with high quality care and parent involvement, to make starting school easier for children.
Durham county councillor John Dormer, chairman of the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership, and chairman of Shildon Town Council Councillor Garry Huntington, presented the award yesterday.
Susan Calvert, pre-school manager, said: "Byerley Road Pre-school is absolutely delighted that in accrediting the group, the Pre-school Learning Alliance recognises the very high standard of education and care we are providing for children."
