NORTHUMBRIA Police plan to concentrate resources in Newcastle city centre to make it safe for revellers over the festive season.
Traditionally, Christmas brings more visitors to the city and, as a consequence, an increase in crime and disorder, including retail crime, street robberies, car crime and illegal street trading.
Newcastle Central Area Command has announced it will put more resources in the city centre to reduce the number of crime and disorder incidents during the Christmas period.
The operation is part of the Northumbria Police Freeze Out campaign, which aims to deter thieves who target cars, homes and shops during the festive period.
The Street Crime Unit, based at the area command, will target offenders by carrying out high-visibility patrols and undercover operations in the city.
Areas covered will include all retail premises, building societies, Post Offices, bus stops, cafes, cash machines and car parks.
Sergeant Alan Stafford, of the Street Crime Unit, said: "The message is simple, commit crime in Newcastle and you will be arrested and firmly dealt with."
