A TEENAGER has died in a road accident.
Police accident investigators are appealing for witnesses following the fatal crash in Chester-le-Street in which Ben Ellison, 17, died.
Mr Ellison, an apprentice motor mechanic, from Plantaganet Avenue, Chester-le-Street, was driving a black Citroen Saxo VTR northbound on the A167 in the town at about 11.15pm on Sunday.
He is believed to have lost control of the car at a left-hand bend, about 200m south of the Ropery Lane roundabout. The car skidded on its side for nearly 100 metres, before crashing into a large road sign. Mr Ellison suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.
The road between the Hermitage roundabout and Ropery Lane roundabout was closed for about five hours.
Mr Ellison was alone in the car and no other vehicles are believed to have been involved, but police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Anyone with information should contact Durham police's accident investigation unit on (0191) 375 2159.
