PUPILS at a health-conscious school tucked into a festive treat yesterday as they celebrated winning an award.
Eastbourne School, in Darlington, has become the first comprehensive school in the town to win Darlington Borough Council's School Heart Wise award.
The accolade is given to schools that offer healthy food options and have good standards of hygiene.
On offer at Eastbourne school are a salad bar and fruit boxes, while free vegetables are also given with every main meal.
To help celebrate their achievement, the school meals team served a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for pupils and staff.
Over the past two weeks, the team has produced more than 6,000 Christmas dinners for children.
They have also provided 1,800 children with a Christmas tea party, including cakes, ice cream, chocolate rolls and sandwiches.
