THERE have been mixed fortunes for two North ports this year.
Fish landing values at Whitby, North Yorkshire, have reached £2m in the past seven months, about £250,000 up on the same period last year.
However at Scarborough, they have fallen £700,000, and Scarborough Council's harbourmaster, Captain Bill Estill, said there was no sign of an improvement.
He said: "Landings at Scarborough are at a disappointing level, and with the current EU restrictions and fleet structure, it is difficult to see any future significant improvement."
Whitby's cargo trade is also making a comeback after many years. Timber is being exported from the port by the Forestry Commission and now other timber-producing companies are showing interest in using Whitby.
