POLICE are warning householders to be on their guard against sneak thieves and burglars who have been targeting houses in Eaglescliffe and Hartburn, in Stockton, over the past two months.
Since November 1, 15 burglaries have been reported in the area, where the thieves have taken car keys to steal the family car. Most crimes have taken place by forcing windows and more than half involved gaining access by insecure doors and windows.
Detective Sergeant Alastair Simpson said: "We really want people to enjoy Christmas and in many cases this has been destroyed by criminals targeting houses to steal expensive vehicles and other valuable items.
"We would ask people to be extra security conscious, to look out for their neighbours and to be aware of anyone acting suspiciously in the area.
"They should ensure doors and windows are kept locked and that keys are not left in doors, and car keys are kept out of sight."
People seeking advice about crime prevention are asked to contact Stockton police on (01642) 302226.
